EKEV (עֵקֶב) Walking in God’s Ways and Remembering His Faithfulness!

Aug 1, 2026    Pastor Teacher Pedro Perez Jr., Worship Leader Peter Perez III

This week’s Torah portion is Ekev (עֵקֶב), meaning “Because,” “If,” or “As a Consequence.”

The name comes from the opening verse of Deuteronomy 7:12:

“Because (Ekev) you listen to these judgments and keep and do them…”

The Hebrew word ekev literally means “heel.” Just as the heel follows every step we take, blessing follows faithful obedience to God. Moses is teaching Israel that covenant blessings are not random, they flow from walking faithfully with the Lord.

As Israel stands on the edge of the Promised Land, Moses continues preparing them. Moses reminds them that God’s while covenant blessings are rooted in His grace, covenant faithfulness requires obedience born out of love for God.

Throughout these chapters today, Moses continues to urge Israel to remember. Remember the wilderness. Remember God’s provision. Remember His discipline. Remember that every blessing comes from Him.

As we journey today through Deuteronomy, the book of Isaiah and the book of Matthew we see this theme throughout every passage: The Lord is faithful to His covenant, and He invites His people to respond with faith, obedience, and unwavering trust.

Moses reminds Israel not to forget the One who brought them through the wilderness and blessed them.

Isaiah will announce hope to a weary people in exile, declaring that God’s redemption and compassion are everlasting.

And Yeshua in the Gospels reveals Himself as the promised Messiah, calling His disciples to recognize who He truly is and to build their lives upon that truth.

For us: Will we remember the Lord in times of both blessing and difficulty, trusting Him with all our hearts and walking faithfully in His ways?

Today we’ll be reading from:

TORAH: Deuteronomy 8–11.

PROPHETS: Isaiah 49:1–51:3.

GOSPELS: Matthew 16:13–20.
